Care for your outdoor garden tools
How many times have you discovered your outdoor tools have rusted while in storage, and how many times have you had to replace them as a result of improper care? Quality outdoor tools can be expensive, and it’s
important to take proper care of them if you want them to last. Tools used for gardening and other outdoor projects require routine care and maintenance in order to remain in good condition and free from rust. To save yourself time and money, take the necessary steps to properly care for your outdoor garden tools, and they’ll remain in good condition for many years to come.
Cleaning
Garden rakes, spades, shovels, and other outdoor tools often become caked with dirt and debris, especially when working in moist clay soil. After every use, it’s essential to brush away dirt and debris, and it’s important to dry tools thoroughly before putting them away. A few minutes of your time can prevent damaging rust and deterioration that can end up costing hundreds of dollars in replacement costs. Simply brush off dirt and debris with a stiff bristle brush, and make certain they’re dry before putting them away.
Rust Removal and Protection
If your outdoor garden tools have rusted in storage, begin by brushing off any remaining dirt and debris with a stiff bristle brush. While wearing gloves and safety glasses, remove any large sections of rust with coarse-grade steel wool. Next, mix a solution of liquid rust remover of your choice according to product label instructions, and pour it over the rusted areas. Continue by going over the metal with fine-grade steel wool, and if your outdoor tools weren’t too badly damaged, they should look like new when you’re finished.
Storage
Protect your outdoor tools from further damage by coating them with an oil-based lubricant of your choice before placing them in storage. While wearing gloves, apply it liberally with a dry rag, and avoid getting it on your clothing. A thin coating of lubricant is all that’s required, and it will protect the tools from moisture caused by humidity and other sources of moisture.
If possible, store your outdoor tools in an area of low humidity, and keep them away from doorways and other areas where they could become exposed to moisture. For best results, hang them from wall-mounted hardware, or store them in a tool rack designed especially for outdoor tools such as garden rakes, spades, and shovels. Your outdoor tools will remain in great condition, and they’ll be ready for use when needed.
